New Years Eve 2005, and a trip to Chester Zoo. Having kids seems to involve the obligatory trips to see animals stuck behind bars. While the work done at Chester Zoo is really commendable, in that their animals are often there as part of breeding programmes to try to improve the chances of that species surviving, I still found it a sadenning experience. One is pretty much forced to see the after-effects of man's short term fixation with profit, greed, and the machinations of capitalism. More often than not the habitats of animals / plants / birds / insects / fish are threatened by man, and they end up in places like Chester Zoo, in an attempt to stop them from becoming extinct.
